ClickBank Profit Challenge Update #1: What I’m Learning So Far

The ClickBank Profit Challenge is underway, and I want to start sharing what I’m learning here on Spare Time Profit.

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I’m interested in simple ways retirees and beginners can use some of their spare time to learn about building an online business.

I’m retired. I’m not looking for another full-time job.

What interests me is learning how to use the internet, affiliate marketing, email marketing, and other tools to build something that can potentially produce additional income while still allowing me to enjoy retirement.

That’s one reason I decided to follow the ClickBank Profit Challenge.

Lesson #1: An Affiliate Link Isn’t a Business

This may sound simple, but I think it’s an important lesson.

Getting an affiliate link is easy.

Getting people to click it, trust your recommendation, join your list, and eventually buy something is a completely different matter.

I’ve promoted different online programs over the years, and I’m continuing to learn that simply placing a link in front of people isn’t enough.

You need a system.

That system can include:

Traffic → Content → Trust → Follow-Up → Offer

That is something I’m paying much more attention to during this Challenge.

Lesson #2: Build Something You Control

Social media can be useful.

Traffic exchanges can be useful.

Solo ads can be useful.

But traffic can disappear as quickly as it arrives.

That’s why I’m continuing to build SpareTimeProfit.com as my home base.

Instead of simply sending every visitor directly to somebody else’s sales page, I want people to have a reason to come back here.

My blog allows me to share what I’m learning, discuss programs I’m testing, and document my progress.

Over time, that creates something more valuable than a single advertisement.

It creates an audience.

Lesson #3: Beginners Don’t Need to Know Everything

This one is important.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to make everything perfect that we never get started.

I’m still learning.

I’m still testing.

I’m still improving.

And that’s okay.

You don’t need to understand every piece of affiliate marketing before taking your first step.

Learn one thing.

Put it into action.

See what happens.

Then improve it.

Learn → Take Action → Measure → Improve

That’s the approach I’m taking.

Lesson #4: Traffic Without Tracking Can Be Expensive

If you’re paying for traffic, you need to know what’s happening after somebody clicks.

Where did the visitor come from?

Did the person stay on the page?

Did they click your link?

Did they become a lead?

Did they eventually buy?

Without tracking, it can be difficult to know which advertising is helping and which advertising is simply spending your money.

This is an area I want to continue improving during the Challenge.

Lesson #5: Think Beyond One Commission

Of course I want commissions.

That’s part of affiliate marketing.

But I’m beginning to think more about the bigger picture.

Instead of asking:

“How can I make one sale?”

I’m asking:

“How can I build a simple online system that I can continue improving?”

That’s a very different question.

And I think it’s a much better question for someone like me who wants to build something in his spare time.

My Goal for This 6-Week Journey

I’m not expecting magic.

I’m looking for progress.

During this Challenge, I want to improve my:

Blog content
Traffic strategy
Affiliate promotions
List-building knowledge
Email marketing
Tracking
Follow-up
Conversion skills

Most importantly, I want to put what I learn into action.

I’ll continue sharing that journey here on Spare Time Profit.
